Women, especially in traditional societies, often perceive matters of personal economy as a male task, but it can be harmful for a woman to leave her financial future up to others. 82% of Arab women do not participate in the workforce. Because of this, they have no financial coverage for old age, no pensions, no insurances or savings. If these women don`t start preparing today, they will receive an old-age allowance too small to live off of later in life Once we tell women this painful truth, they wake up. They start to inquire about old-age provisions at the bank in order to take "an active approach towards personal economy."
Talking to other women, we realized that many had never before heard of the social benefits and tax reductions to which they are entitled, and naturally, most had no idea how to claim these entitlements either. Information on such matters published by the state does not reach Arab women who either do not read Hebrew, do not surf the Internet, or often do not travel outside of their villages. Because of this, we bring the information directly to women through workshops, seminars, easy-to-read guides in Arabic, and one-on-one counseling.
A problem caused by women`s unawareness of their benefits is that it can make women an easy victim of professional misconduct. Lacking better knowledge, many women do not answer back when the staff of social welfare institutions tells them that they are not entitled to any benefits, or that there is no money to pay them the benefits. We encourage women to demand what is rightfully theirs; through such encouragement, women can demand a benefit until they get it because they know for sure that they are entitled to it.
