On March 6th, the Women's Council of Deir Hanna, Treasure, in cooperation with the community-based women’s organization, Waves, commemorated the international struggle of women in light of International Women’s Day, Mother’s Day and Earth Day. The activists proclaimed their solidarity with Palestinian prisoner Hanna Shalaby, who remained in her 22nd day of hunger strike. The women called for the recognition of her rights and laid out a schedule of planned activities in support of her release. Addressing the gathering, Waves group leader Suheir Al Hussein provided a historical context of the struggle for women’s equality. Participants also heard a lecture entitled, "The right of women to work" provided by Adv. Alhan Nahaus-Daoud of Kayan-Feminist Organization, in which she spoke about the laws that protect women's employment rights and the ongoing struggle to raise the status of women in the workplace.
