Econimic Empowerment

"Women's Supermarket" Home-Based Business

Rural women catalyzed the economic empowerment project. From an empowerment course discussion about the need for sources of income, a small group decided to start a cooperative to sell food. In one food fair held in Haifa, eight women earned $1,500 in one day, the first time any of them had ever earned money for their culinary skills. The group has a few new members and is now taking a Kayan course on Economics, and working to create a business cooperative together with CJAED-Center for Jewish-Arab Economic Development. Kayan is interested in mentoring the group, and disseminating this model for other women's groups.

Gender and Economics Knowledge-Based Training

Together with the ADVA-Institute for Social Research and Policy, a training course on Gender and Economics, and the effect of economic policies on the lives of women in Israel, is being held with 15 participants. When complete, the women graduates will be trained to lead workshops and discussions in rural and urban locations, and bring economic literacy to more women, increasing women's ability to take an active part in private and public life.
